Mask Off: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

What if the call on your life was bigger than the fears you have around following through with it?

What if you dropped the “who me?” act and instead, acknowledged that yes, it is you who is being called to this work?

And yes, you feel small.

Yes, you feel intimidated.

Yes, you feel overwhelmed.

But God.

Those two words should be all that matters really.

The fact that He goes before you and is behind you.

So let’s focus on that a little, shall we?

Let’s focus on that moment of you and Him, without the noise and everything else which can crowd the call.

How did it feel when you knew you’d been chosen and predestined for this and you just knew He would be with you like He promised?

And so what’s changed?

Fear of the ‘opposition’?

Well, let’s squash that one immediately shall we? Because you know there IS no opposition, right? You know that the race marked out for you is the race marked out for YOU?

Which means that nothing and no one is running the same race you are, no matter how similar they look.

Glad we got that cleared up.

But then we have this other big one, don’t we? This one which lingers in the air, no matter how ‘accomplished’ we feel and how far we’ve come.

It’s almost as though we’re waiting for someone to call us out.

Waiting for someone to realise that we’re not cut out for this and we should just go back to whatever place of obscurity it was that we came from.

Spoiler alert… If you’ve read the Bible lately, you’ll recognise that pretty much ZERO of the people God called were ‘qualified’ for the work they were tasked with.

Gideon, Esther, Moses, Mary… Which of these ‘greats’ had it all together before they got to work?

The truth of the matter is you’re exactly where you’re meant to be if it’s where God’s told you to go.

It’s no real use arguing with God about it either. Like He can’t see our human frailties, vulnerabilities and weakness.

Just take what He said to Moses when he tried to go against what he was called to, for instance…

“Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.” (Exodus 4:11-12)

We can kind of overlook that part, can’t we? The fact that God ALREADY KNOWS what’s going on regarding our ‘weaknesses’ because He created them and yet He’s STILL calling us to go.

Ready for the bottom line?

Our job is first to make sure we’re walking closely enough with Him to hear when He calls us and second, to obey when He does.

The world is waiting for your work.
