Forgotten your FIRST love? #REALtalk...
I get it, truly I get it. It’s the end of the year and all of a sudden (amidst the last minute Christmas shopping of course because I’m convinced this can’t only be me…) you’re wondering whether that next client is going to come, whether or not you’re going to meet your December goals and whether or not you should tweak your funnel a little bit so that your tripwire starts converting at a higher rate…
STOP FOR A SEC.
AND no, of course ‘stop’ is NOT what you want to hear right now. We’ve established that. Because the presents, the clients, the goals and the sales funnel… but just bear with me a minute.
Because this is also that common time where we’re hearing ‘the reason for the season’ quotes like they’re going out of fashion but before we overlook the sixth one we’ve read this month, let’s take it a little more seriously for a minute. Would that be okay?
“I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” (Revelation 2:2-4)
When the church in Ephesus is being challenged in this passage found in Revelation, the hard work and the endurance and even the opposition they have against those who are ‘evil’ is commended.
And I guess I should say that about you, about me, about us at first. We’ve worked HARD this year, right? And not for a second am I trying to downplay the hard work that’s gone into all you’ve done. It’s to be commended and celebrated.
But then there’s that next part of the passage which just sneaks in, right?
And this is where I need us to pause and where I want to share a little more because just like the last minute Christmas shopping, I’m hopeful I’m not the only one guilty of this either…
How often my head has jumped to goals and clients and funnels before it’s jumped to my ‘first love’. Can you relate?
How often I’ve wanted to check my Instagram feed before I’ve fed my soul with the Word of God.
Ouch.
But listen #noguilthere AT ALL. We’re all in the same boat which means we all get it, right?
That’s why one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to ensure that not only am I ensuring that whatever I write, create or talk about comes from a place of OVERFLOW – from a place of time with God FIRST but also that that’s the experience I create for my clients too.
I mean, of course that’s what I’ve tried for do for the whole of 2017 which is why my client calls start with prayer and time in the Word and why I speak of Biblical principals alongside practical strategies the whole time I’m sharing anything… BUT I’m taking it to the next level.
Here’s just one of the reasons why… I remember when I was a High School Teacher and in one of the schools I taught in ran an INSET day training (a day where the kids aren’t in school and it’s just time for the teachers to get trained up and prep for the term ahead etc.) Anyway, the head teacher was talking. I’m sure they were well meaning in their words – they just wanted the best for their school and the students in it I’m sure. But here’s what they said…
“You’ve heard the phrase ‘you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’. Make it drink.”
The horse was the students and the water was getting the grades.
That phrase never left me to be honest. And it sounds weird now. But there was something about it I literally couldn’t shake.
‘Making it drink’ meant near enough doing the work for them if you needed to, cutting a couple of corners if it helped and losing all sense of work/life balance if it meant that your students (and the school) were a ‘success’.
But is that ACTUALLY success?!
The funniest thing about all of that is I’m starting to see it trickle into the business world too… That notion that you must do WHATEVER IT TAKES to make the sale, get the client, and everything in between.
But little sense of first love foundation and what it REALLY takes to thrive.
They say be the change you want to see and so I’ll go first if that’s what it takes. How about you?
