Cookie Cutter
Cookie cutters are for cookies.
We know this in theory of course. We know that people aren’t meant to be moulded to ‘fit’ the status quo.
And yet it happens every day.
Every single day people are told they’re “too big”, “too small”, “too black”, “too white”, “too something” to be a part of whatever it is they’re trying to be a part of. I mean, it might not always be said with words, because most of us don’t like confrontation.
But the stares, the comments and the raised eyebrows say enough.
Sadly, this dynamic transcends gender, race, industry and beyond. And I’ve found it to be pretty prominent in the online space which is why I want to address it today.
In fact, it was a post from a current client of mine which really made me think about this. We had our first call yesterday and after it, she wrote some of the most wonderful words on Facebook in my group (see below) but it was this part which struck me the most…
“I've worked with high-level business coaches before and for the first time I finally feel like someone is helping me become the BEST version of MYSELF instead of trying to turn me into a past version of themselves.”
I love this for SO many reasons, but here’s one of them…
I have nothing against network marketing/MLM if that’s what works for you. But I’m aware that the way it works is that you have your products and you’re given certain marketing messages/techniques and you’re required to build your brand around a foundation which is already there for you…
I feel like people are walking into service-based industries with the same thought process.
That they’ll be given the ‘method’ and perhaps even the product and then expect these ‘massive money months’ we hear about every five minutes simply because they followed some steps… and if they (shudder) don’t follow the steps, it’s just not going to work out.
THAT IS NOT HOW THIS WORKS, PEOPLE!
This is NOT ‘one size fits all’.
What worked for her won’t necessarily work for you.
But if you think about it, do you really WANT to be like her? Wouldn’t you rather become the best version of yourself?
Wouldn’t you rather unearth the way God has wired YOU as opposed to copying the way someone else has been wired?
As ever, the Bible says it better than I can…
“If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.” (1 Corinthians 12:17-20)
You’re here walk YOUR path, to write YOUR story, to share YOUR message.
If someone tries to give you a ‘formula for success’ which hasn’t first involved you seeking God’s will for your life and taking it from there… run.
And no, I don’t want to ‘super spiritualise’ it and suggest that there isn’t work to be done, tangible actions to be taken and results to be had by taking consistent action.
But CONSISTENT is the operative word in that statement.
There is no ‘magic formula’ which will take you from hobby to business.
Instead, you take consistent action doing what you LOVE – your purpose work, you get the support you need to take the next step and hold you accountable and then you KEEP GOING.
Just like there’s no magic formula, there’s no magic timer either.
I can’t tell you when ‘the breakthrough moment’ is going to happen. That’s up to God. Do you trust Him enough to keep going even though you can’t see it yet?
So no, we’re not ‘cookie cuttering’ this thing. We’re trusting God with HIS leading, HIS timing and HIS will and we’re taking the consistent action needed in order to take the next step. Our own next step.
And that is IT.
Stop copying everyone else.
Stop giving God a timeline.
Keep praying.
Keeping showing up.
